Dhow is the generic name for a wooden sailing vessel with one or more masts and triangular sails (lateens). For millennia dhows have sailed the Gulf of Oman, Arabian waters and the Indian Ocean. Sur, located 93 miles south of Muscat, has been the center of boat making in Oman for centuries. Although less in demand today, handcrafted dhows are still built by expert craftsmen using no sketches or blueprints in a process that takes about one year to complete.
Tourists are free to walk around the Sur shipyard which we did. At the time we arrived, late afternoon, only one dhow was under construction so the sound of hammers on teak was mild rather than an orchestra. If a slice of Sur dhow building interests you, watch this 2:15 min VIDEO.
